Uniqueness

Does Shikaku Have a Unique Solution?

Not every Shikaku puzzle is guaranteed to have a unique solution. Some clue layouts allow exactly one complete rectangle partition, some allow several, and some are inconsistent enough that they allow none at all.

For players, uniqueness matters because it affects confidence. If a puzzle is designed well, each deduction should guide you toward one stable end state. If multiple full partitions exist, a board can feel ambiguous even when each local move seems reasonable.

For puzzle authors and site operators, uniqueness matters even more. It helps keep Daily challenges fair, makes archive boards feel intentional, and supports clearer teaching content. A guide or review article is easier to write when there is one canonical logic path to discuss.

This is exactly where Solver becomes useful. A solver can search for more than one valid partition. If it finds several, that does not automatically make the puzzle bad, but it does change how the puzzle should be labeled, explained, and used inside the product.
